The joint tax return is for married couples and offers some tax advantages over married and separate returns.

To be eligible for joint filing status, you must be married in the year you file jointly.
Applicants who have recently lost a spouse are also eligible for a joint filing tax advantage by applying as a qualified widow or widower.
