Home Dictionary L Legal Separation Legal separation is an agreement made by a court whereby a married couple lives apart, usually apart. A separation order may include financial obligations, child custody and visitation agreements, and alimony. For some people, legal separation is preferable to divorce due to religious beliefs, financial reasons, and for the benefit of minor children.
