Liquidate means to sell an asset for cash.

Investors may decide to liquidate investments for a variety of reasons, including a need for cash, a desire to get rid of weak investments, or consolidation of portfolio assets.
In addition to voluntary liquidation, individuals and legal entities may be forced to liquidate assets through bankruptcy proceedings or at the initiative of their broker in response to a request for additional funds.
