• The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was entered into in 1994 to encourage trade between the US, Mexico and Canada.

  • NAFTA has reduced or eliminated tariffs on imports and exports between the three member countries, creating a huge free trade area.
  • The two side agreements to NAFTA aimed to establish high overall standards for workplace safety, labor rights and environmental protection to prevent businesses from moving to other countries to take advantage of lower wages or more lenient regulations.
  • The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), signed November 30, 2018 and effective July 1, 2020, replaced NAFTA.
  • NAFTA was a controversial agreement: in some ways (growth in trade and investment), it improved the US economy; others (employment, trade balance), it hurt the economy.
