Retained retained earnings are the portion of retained earnings that is not earmarked for a specific business purpose.

Dividends are usually paid out of retained earnings in accordance with the dividend payment schedule.
An increase in retained earnings may indicate that the business is doing well or that it is not investing enough in itself.
