• An appraisal clause is a provision on property insurance that allows an insurer or an insured person to require a mandatory appraisal of damaged property in the event of a dispute over its value and establishes the required appraisal procedure. Several jurisdictions now allow either party to waive the appraisal requirement, as evidenced by state approval of amendments to commercial property policy, homeowner policy, or both. Allowing the insurer to reject the policyholder’s claim for appraisal is disadvantageous to policyholders.
