• A breakpoint is the point at which loss levels within a restricted group or risk holding group (RRG) are differentiated as “primary” or “excess” losses. For example, a typical breakpoint for a captive of a large group might be $250,000. Losses above this level are considered “excessive”, while losses below this level are considered “primary”. The optimal breakpoint for any program should be determined by the individual characteristics of that program. There is no “correct” breakpoint.
